The 26th March marked a special day in the history of St. Peter’s Care Home. Our wonderful carer Steven Mills celebrated 30 years of dedication and commitment to the residents of St. Peter’s. He joined the home on the 26th March 1992 and has been with us ever since.A naturally shy man, ‘Steve’ was a bit bowled over when we had several entertainers come to the home, in appreciation of his 30 years of service. Below he describes his time with us in his own words, but first a few from us.Steve has always been there for other people. The residents of the home have come to admire and respect him like few others, such has been his impact over the years. His dedication to St Peter’s and through the home to the residents of the village of Ruddington has been extraordinary. We have been very lucky to have him working here for so long. His service is probably best described by just one story of his caring and compassionate nature – there are many others we could tell. One year it snowed outside the home, and one of our residents was in the final stages of her life. It was her dying wish to see the snow, but she was far too frail to be able to see out the windows. Steve was determined that this lovely lady’s wish should be realised, so he picked her up and carried her to the window to make her dying wish come true. It was a gesture that was typical of the man.This is what Steve had to say about his 30 years at St Peter’s….“This week marks 30 years of me working at St Peter’s Care Home. We had entertainers in for the residents but what I didn’t know was that it was also for me, in appreciation of my 30 years’ service! Having got over the initial shock/surprise, I began to reflect on those 30 years that have passed. What makes me stay here when so many have left?From the first day I walked into this place, a former vicarage, I felt the homeliness of it and that feeling is still here today. It’s expanded over the years: new owner, new management, new workers, new residents. But it still has a desire to care; to serve; to show love; compassion; dignity; a sense of belonging; a feeling of home.Each day I choose to come to work with that desire to serve others and to be the best I can be because they need it – they need to be in a place where they can trust us, rely on us, depend on us, where they can be treated as equals. A place where we can give daily, but also receive.During the entertainment, a gentlemen got my attention, gave me a handshake and a nod that showed appreciation, it gave me a lump in my throat. Me, a humble servant to others yet being given so much! And this is how it’s been over those 30 years. Sure, some hard times, very hard times; deaths, stresses, pressures, not to mention Covid.So, why should I stay here? Well, why not! While there’s a person in need, we’ll try and meet their needs; welcome them in because it’s their home – we’re just workers, visiting for the day, and hopefully tomorrow.Steven Mills, Carer, Thursday 26.03.1992 – ….. ?We couldn’t have put it better. HIs caring nature, and the happiness that he brought to the lady he carried to the window, has been repeated countless times over the years, and we can’t imagine our home without him being around. So, here’s to Steve, a remarkable man, carer, and colleague. Thank you for everything you have done for the residents, us, and the home – we had such a brilliant day celebrating your remarkable achievement.

At St Peter’s our lovely residents know how to have a good time, and they certainly did that last week when we were treated to some fabulous entertainment. We were treated to a musical extravaganza from some well known ‘personalities’. As you can see from the videos and the photos, everyone was in a party mood. Suffice to say everyone had a great time and there was lots of singing and dancing going on. We reckon our residents could show the youth of today a thing or two about having fun!
